Center for Realist Ethics

Human dignity, consequences, and political responsibility. Examining moral judgment under conditions of conflict and uncertainty.

What responsibilities accompany the exercise of power?

Realist ethics takes both moral obligation and political circumstance seriously. This center examines how people and institutions should judge actions when legitimate aims conflict, knowledge is incomplete, and the consequences extend beyond those who make the decision.

Questions guiding our work

  1. How should responsibility be judged when every option carries a cost?
  2. What obligations extend beyond national borders?
  3. How can restraint, courage, and prudence guide the use of power?
